Friday, May 16, 2025(NAIROBI)__ Diaspora Affairs PS Roseline K. Njogu hosted Mr. Ibukun Adewumi, Head, UNESCO Ocean, Sub-Commission for Africa
& Adjacent Island States (IOCAFRICA) Secretariat.
The discussions centered on opportunities for investment by the Kenya Diaspora
across the entire value chain of the blue economy such as marine resource
extraction and production, transport and logistics, tourism and recreation as
well as sustainable fisheries among others.
PS Njogu and Mr. Adewumi noted the immense potential that lies in leveraging
the diaspora community to grow the sector.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of developing skills and expertise
across the blue economy value chain, which is experiencing a rising demand for
specialized talent from Kenya especially for seafarer. The diaspora, including
Kenyan seafarers who are both part of the diaspora and the blue economy
workforce, bring valuable and diverse global experience, networks and
knowledge, making them well-positioned to help bridge this skills gap.
By fostering stronger diaspora engagement in these sectors, Kenya can enhance
its global footprint in the blue economy, particularly in the critical
sub-sectors of trade and maritime security.
Amb. Hellen Gichuhi, Secretary, Diaspora Welfare & Partnerships was present
during the meeting
