Wednesday, July 22, 2026(MOMBASA)__A delegation from the Sawubona Foundation, coordinated by a Kenyan diaspora nurse Ms. Virginia Weiss, in partnership with the University Clinic Saarland and the State Department for Diaspora Affairs is conducting a free neurosurgery medical camp at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital in Mombasa.
The mission is being led by renowned neurosurgeon Prof. Dr. Joachim Oertel and includes 14 specialist doctors from Germany.
It marks the Foundation’s seventh neurosurgical medical camp at the Coast General and Referral Hospital, carried out in close collaboration with resident neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Okanga.
Beyond delivering life-changing neurosurgical care to patients, the mission is also focused on skills, knowledge, and technology transfer. Through mentorship, hands-on training, and professional collaboration, the visiting specialists are working alongside Kenyan healthcare professionals to strengthen local capacity in neurosurgery.
The exchange is expected to promote the adoption of advanced surgical techniques and contribute to the long-term sustainability of specialized healthcare services in Kenya.
The team is also conducting follow-up assessments for patients who underwent surgery during previous missions, as well as evaluate and treat new neurosurgical cases.
The SDDA’s participation underscores the Government’s commitment to harnessing diaspora expertise to facilitate knowledge exchange, foster strategic partnerships, and support the transfer of skills and medical technologies that strengthen Kenya’s healthcare system.
Diaspora Affairs was represented by Mr. Abdilbasid Hassan, Mr. Adan Muhsin, Mr. Cedric Njaga and Mr. Jemimah Mungai.
