Friday, October 10, 2025(MERU)__On this Mazingira Day 2025, the State Department for Diaspora Affairs (SDDA) staff participated in a tree-planting initiative at the Bishop Lawi Imathiu Primary and Boarding Junior Secondary School in Meru County.
The event, held under the national theme "Citizen-centric Tree Growing and Environmental Stewardship," saw the planting of over 2,200 fruit seedlings, transforming the school's landscape into a future hub of sustenance and shade.
Leading the SDDA staff was Dr. John Korir, Secretary Administration at the SDDA, who represented Diaspora Affairs PS, Ms. Roseline K. Njogu, CBS.
Dr. Korir emphasized the symbolic and practical importance of the exercise, linking it directly to the government's broader environmental agenda of increasing forest and tree cover.
The activity was a collaborative effort, drawing participation from a wide array of stakeholders, underscoring the whole-of-society push for environmental sustainability. Key partners present included technical experts from the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) and the National Government Administrative Officers (NGAO).
The educational sector was represented by the school's Board of Management, the Sub-County Director of Education, and officials from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), highlighting the integral role schools play in fostering a conservation culture.
Further solidifying the community's involvement were staff from the Meru Huduma Centre and the Bishop of the Methodist Church.
The choice of fruit trees—over 2,200 of them—aligns perfectly with the "Citizen-centric" theme, providing tangible benefits to the school. Beyond their environmental value, the trees are expected to supplement the pupils’ nutrition in years to come as well as avail an opportunity for agricultural education.
The event at Bishop Lawi Imathiu School stands as a clear example of how government agencies, communities, and institutions can unite to create a lasting, positive impact on the environment, ensuring a greener, more resilient future for the next generation.
The Mazingira Day 2025 and the initiatives led by the SDDA including its Diaspora Forests exercises in Konza Technopolis, Laikipia, Kisumu, Mombasa, Vihiga, Nyeri, Trans Nzoia and Kirinyaga Counties are part of the strategies to enhance and contribute to the national 15 billion trees target by 2032.
Earlier on, Dr. Korir paid a courtesy call on Mr. Jacob Ouma, the Meru County Commissioner.
