State Department for Diaspora Affairs (SDDA) PS Secretary Ms. Roseline Kathure Njogu, has urged Kenyans to conduct thorough due diligence and ensure they obtain the proper documentation before traveling abroad for employment.
The PS, while responding to a question raised by one of the journalists, emphasized that SDDA aims to reduce the number of Kenyans who fall victim to human trafficking and exploitation, particularly those misusing tourist visas to seek jobs overseas.
Speaking at a press conference held at the MFDA Headquarters as she accompanied Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs H.E Dr. Musalia Mudavadi, the PS noted that some Kenyans, enticed by the promise of lucrative job opportunities, travel with inadequate documentation, such as tourist visas, which leaves them vulnerable to exploitation, abuse, and legal repercussions in their host countries.
She further encouraged Kenyans to collaborate with licensed recruitment agencies, verify the legitimacy of job offers, seek guidance from SDDA, and report any suspicious agents or activities to the appropriate authorities.
The media briefing, attended by Dr. Korir Sing'Oei, Principal Secretary for State Department for Foreign Affairs, also provided an opportunity to highlight the milestones and achievements of the State Department for Diaspora Affairs.
Among the milestones mentioned were the negotiations and signing of comprehensive labor agreements between Kenya and Germany, as well as a bilateral labor agreement with Austria.
Other notable initiatives included the Kazi Majuu programmes, the evacuation and repatriation of Kenyans from conflict zones such as Lebanon, the draft Diaspora Policy 2024, the diaspora skills and technology transfer program, and the rollout of four regional job fairs.
