EXPLORING OPPORTUNITIES FOR SEAMLESS LABOR MIGRATION THROUGH KENYA, AUSTRIA COLLABORATION

January 28, 2025 (Vienna, Austria) — In a significant move to enhance the relationship between Austria and Kenya, Mr. Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer, Secretary General of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber of Commerce, hosted a round-table discussion.

The event brought together a Kenyan delegation led by Ms. Roseline Kathure Njogu, Principal Secretary for Diaspora Affairs, alongside representatives from the Chamber of Commerce to explore collaborative opportunities for labor migration between the two nations.

The discussions centered on establishing a more efficient framework for labor migration that would yield mutual benefits for both Austrian businesses and Kenya's skilled workforce.

This conversation was particularly timely, coinciding with the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Kenya and Austria aimed at fostering cooperation in labor migration.

Key topics included aligning Kenya’s workforce with the needs of employers in Austria, particularly those represented by the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber.

As both nations seek to strengthen economic ties, it is essential to ensure that Kenyan workers possess the skills and qualifications required in Austria's labor market.

PS Njogu emphasized the need to create pathways for Kenyan professionals, especially in sectors where there are skill shortages in Austria, such as healthcare, engineering, and information technology.

This initiative would not only help Austria address its labor shortages but also provide Kenyan workers with valuable international experience and opportunities.

With the MoU serving as a foundation for further collaboration, the discussion also explored how both countries could create a seamless process for labor migration, from recruitment to integration.

Austria’s commitment to working with Kenya reflects its growing recognition of the importance of international labor mobility.

Through this partnership, both nations aim to establish a balanced and equitable system that benefits workers, employers, and their respective economies.

By building on the momentum generated by the MoU and this round-table discussion, Austria and Kenya have the potential to set a global benchmark for effective and fair labor migration practices.

Attendees at the meeting included Ms. Valerie Rugene, Deputy Head of Mission at the Kenyan Embassy in Vienna; Ms. Irene Karari, Director and Head of the Skills and Expertise Division; Mr. Glenns Etyang, Deputy Director/OPS; and Mr. Brian Kipchirchir, FSO.
