Tuesday, February 10, 2026(NAIROBI) – Kenya and Romania today held a consultative meeting in Nairobi that sought to explore diverse areas of cooperation.

Ms. Roseline Kathure Njogu, CBS, Principal Secretary for Diaspora Affairs, and Dr. Korir Sing’Oei, CBS, Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs, led the Kenyan delegation. While H.E. Clara Staicu, Romania’s Secretary of State for European Affairs, who led the Romanian side alongside Ms. Ileana Dinculescu, Director in Romania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The discourse revolved around strengthening bilateral relations, labour mobility, regional peace and security, and multilateral cooperation.

A central priority was the welfare of the over 400 Kenyans in Romania, predominantly students and workers in non-skilled and semi-skilled sectors. Ms. Njogu underscored Kenya’s push for a labour migration Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This framework seeks to match Romania’s labour needs with Kenya’s goals for skills development, increased remittances, and knowledge transfer.

Both sides explored mutual recognition of skills and certificates, ethical recruitment practices, and structured mobility frameworks that prioritize fairness, dignity, and opportunity for Kenyan talent in global markets.

The consultations reaffirmed a shared commitment to people-centered migration, paving the way for deeper partnership.

Amb. Gentiana Serbu, Romanian envoy to Kenya; Mr. Dragos Palade, Deputy Head of Mission; and other officials. From Kenya, Deputy Director General Ms. Judy Njau, Head of the Europe and Commonwealth Directorate, and representatives from the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs were present during the engagement.
