DIASPORA AFFAIRS JOINS KEY PARTNERS FOR ROUND-TABLE TALKS ON LABOUR MOBILITY

Monday, October 13, 2025(NAIROBI)__The State Department for Diaspora Affairs today participate in a round-table on labour mobility, bringing together different stakeholders including government officials, development partners, civil society and private sector players in the labour mobility space.

The two-day event held in Nairobi and organized by the International Labour Organization(ILO) in partnership with the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, is aimed at strengthening Kenya’s approach to labour mobility and safeguarding the welfare of its diaspora workers.

Amb. Isaiya Kabira, Secretary for Diaspora Investments and Entrepreneurship, representing Diaspora Affairs PS, Ms. Roseline K. Njogu,CBS, noted that Kenya’s diaspora represents a vital component of Kenya’s national development agenda, highlighting that labour mobility presents both challenges and opportunities.

The discussions centered on three key pillars: building the capacity of policymakers, fostering whole-of-government coordination, and championing strategies that treat labour mobility as a tool for economic diplomacy, job creation, and human capital development.

A key initiative highlighted was the Diaspora Placement Agency (DPA), which works with partners to promote ethical recruitment, ensure fair employment contracts, provide essential pre-departure training, and create clear pathways for Kenyan workers abroad.

The round-table underscores that diaspora contributions extend far beyond remittances, encompassing skills, expertise and technology transfer.

The State Department remains committed and will continue to explore avenues for safeguarding workers, leveraging diaspora capabilities and advancing sustainable national development.

The Diaspora Affairs delegation included: Ms. Irene Karari, Director/Head of the Skills and Expertise Division, Mr. Ledama Meisashi, FSO and Mr. Philip Opwora, FSO.
