Thursday, December 4, 2025(OMAN)__The State Department for Diaspora Affairs represented by Amb. Hellen Gichuhi, met a section of diaspora association leaders in Oman where they discussed workers protection and welfare

The meeting, attended by diaspora representatives Mr. Martin Mbuta and Mr. Aphrax Luyali, served as a direct channel to voice the pressing concerns of Kenyan workers in Oman and to align on strategies for their protection and well-being.

Ambassador Gichuhi, leading the delegation, opened the dialogue by outlining the State Department’s broad 10-point mandate, emphasizing its dedicated role in safeguarding and empowering Kenyan citizens living and working overseas.

A central part of the discussions focused on the systemic challenges faced by Kenyan diaspora workforce in Oman. The diaspora leaders highlighted issues ranging from unethical recruitment practices and contract violations to welfare and protection concerns, underscoring the need for stronger intervention mechanisms.

In response, the delegation detailed the ongoing measures being implemented by the Government of Kenya to promote safe, regular, and orderly labour migration. These include strengthened pre-departure training, enhanced oversight of recruitment agencies, and the development of streamlined protection frameworks to defend workers’ rights and dignity.

Beyond policy discussions, the visit had a strong practical and humanitarian focus. The delegation conducted a dedicated wellness and capacity-building training for the staff of the Kenyan mission in Oman. The session aimed to equip them with essential skills to manage their own mental well-being while effectively supporting distressed members of the diaspora community. This initiative is designed to build resilience and improve psychosocial first-response capabilities within the embassy.

In an outreach effort, the team also held targeted counselling sessions with a number of Kenyan workers currently in distressing situations. The sessions provided a confidential and safe space for individuals to share their experiences and receive direct psychosocial support.

Amb. Gichuhi was accompanied by Mr. Polycarp Otedo, Deputy Director-Skills and Expertise Division, Ms. Nyambura Kamau-FSO, and  Ms. Abiya Nelima-FSO.
