DEBRIEFING SESSION FOLLOWING THE SUCCESSFUL URO-ONCOLOGY MEDICAL CAMP AT KUTRRH

Thursday, August 7, 2025(NAIROBI)__Diaspora Affairs PS Roseline K. Njogu, CBS, today, held a debriefing session with key Kenyan diaspora members: Mr. Frederick Bw’Ombongi from Allina Health, Dr. Kenny Karanja of the University of Minnesota, and Mr. Sam Ireri, a diaspora returnee from Minnesota currently employed at Equity Bank.

The meeting followed the recent success of the Uro-Oncology medical camp held at Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH), which was organized collaboratively by @diaspora_ke, KUTRRH, and Allina Health, a U.S.-based healthcare organization.

The session provided a platform to review the outcomes of the medical camp and discuss opportunities to deepen long-term partnerships between the government and the diaspora. Discussions centered on enhancing the transfer of skills, knowledge, and technology from diaspora experts to Kenya.

Participants also explored the expanding role of diaspora philanthropy and emphasized supporting the commercialization of innovations developed by Kenyans. They highlighted the strategic value of diaspora-backed investments in Kenyan startups as a way to leverage talent and innovation.

The conversation further addressed the emerging possibility of offshoring jobs, especially in the health sector’s radiology field, where Kenyan professionals could offer remote diagnostic services to international clients.

The success of the camp underscored the importance of ongoing training and strengthening connections between Kenyan institutions and diaspora professionals. Consequently, the meeting called for more strategic and structured engagement mechanisms with the diaspora to fully incorporate their expertise within Kenya’s national development framework.

Also present were Amb. Isaiya Kabira, Secretary for Diaspora Investments, Skills and Entrepreneurship; Ms. Irene Karari, Director and Head of the Skills and Expertise Division; and Mr. Glens Etyang, Deputy Director/OPS.
